We just lost 70 minutes of sunlight—here’s what it means for you

Hi!

Here in the Northeast, September is a turning point. We lose nearly 70–77 minutes of sunlight in just one month. Terrible, but nothing we can do about it so we must adapt.

That loss isn’t just noticeable on your evening walk/commute—it impacts your HPA axis (Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal system), the command center that regulates stress, sleep, and energy.

Think of the HPA axis like a thermostat:

  • The hypothalamus senses stress

  • It signals the pituitary gland

  • Which tells the adrenals to release cortisol

  • Cortisol rises → your brain senses it → the system dials back

That’s the loop. But with shorter days + daily stress, the feedback system often breaks down.

  • Too much cortisol → “wired but tired,” restless nights, anxious thoughts.

  • Too little cortisol → fatigue, brain fog, afternoon crashes.

Next email, I’ll show you how adaptogens and nutrients support this loop differently—plus how we can actually measure what’s happening inside your body.

I still remember the first time I tested my own cortisol back in 2001. My levels were completely shot. Looking back, it made sense—huge student loans, just a handful of patients, and my father was dying from cancer. That’s when I went gluten-free and really dialed in my supplementation. It was a turning point in how I think about stress and resilience, and why I take the HPA axis so seriously today.
