Homocysteine and Brain Health

Hey!

In our last email, we broke down what homocysteine is and why it matters. Today, let’s go deeper—especially into how it impacts your brain.

Homocysteine and Brain Health

One of the strongest links in the research? Elevated homocysteine increases your risk of silent brain infarcts and white matter lesions—both known to contribute to cognitive decline and dementia.

In a study from the Rotterdam Scan Study, researchers found that people with high homocysteine levels had more brain lesions and undiagnosed strokes, even if they had no symptoms.

So while a basic lab may say “you’re in range,” your brain may already be under silent attack.

Why Does Homocysteine Go Up?
- Low B12, B6, Folate – especially the methylated forms your body can use
- MTHFR or genetic issues – that impair methylation
- Gut issues – poor absorption, low stomach acid, inflammation
- Chronic stress or inflammation – which increase demand on your detox pathways

What We Do at Apollo Health

We don’t just flag a problem—we solve it. Here’s how we help patients bring down high homocysteine and improve brain health:

- Targeted supplements: Methyl B12, Methylfolate, B6, TMG, Magnesium, Zinc
- Gut and detox support: Liver herbs, probiotics, stomach acid balance
- Nutritional strategy: More leafy greens, sulfur-rich foods, clean proteins
- Lab retesting: So we know it’s actually working

We've helped patients improve their energy, mood, and mental clarity by addressing this one overlooked marker.

This is included in every Functional Lab Review at Apollo Health. It's that important.
