The Truth About MTHFR and Homocysteine – A Simple Breakdown

The Truth About MTHFR and Homocysteine – A Simple Breakdown

March 06, 2025•1 min read

The other day, my wife Amy asked me about MTHFR mutations because her friends were talking about it. They were making it sound like having an MTHFR mutation means you’re automatically at risk for health problems. But that’s not really how it works.

Yes, MTHFR plays a role in methylation, a process that helps your body detox, make neurotransmitters, and regulate homocysteine. But here’s the key point: MTHFR is just one piece of the puzzle.

What actually matters is homocysteine levels—because that’s what tells us if there’s a real problem.

Why is Homocysteine Important?

Homocysteine is a byproduct your body needs to clear out. If it builds up, it can:

🚨 Damage blood vessels (raising heart disease & stroke risk)

🧠 Contribute to brain fog, memory loss, and nerve issues

⚡ Increase inflammation and oxidative stress

👶 Affect pregnancy (higher risk of miscarriage and birth defects)

If homocysteine is high, we can optimize B vitamins (B6, B12, folate), support methylation, and reduce inflammation to get things back on track.

If it’s normal, there’s no need to stress over a genetic test that may not even be affecting you.

At the end of the day, genes are just blueprints—what really matters is how your body is functioning.

And that’s why homocysteine testing is more important than just knowing your MTHFR status.
